The Reasons People Never Reach Their Potential

Since everyone keeps telling me how much they love that Get The Guy is not JUST about love and men, but applicable to other parts of life too, I wanted to take the time today to help you take EVERYTHING in your life up a notch.

There’s something that has always amazed me about people.
Whether I’m working with a celebrity like Eva Longoria, a company like Virgin, or an institution like Oxford University, no matter what level of success a person or organisation has reached, there are there are 5 major roadblocks that hold them back from getting to the next level.
As I go through these with you, think about which of them you are currently experiencing (you’ll almost certainly find you’d like help in all five, even if one roadblock is bigger for you right now).

In times of strife or uncertainty, it is easy to beat yourself up – to think you’re not good enough. It is even easier to forget that despite all of our differences we are born with one very important thing is common: potential – and lots of it. What seems difficult, at times, is remembering this potential for greatness lies within us all. So I have compiled a short, easy to-do list with words of inspiration from great thinkers who have recognized their potential as a reminder and an inspiration, for those who have forgotten amidst the daily bump and grind, how to realize their power within:

The secret to dealing with setbacks

Hey,

Have you noticed that life doesn’t always go the way you expect?

I’ve been following my excitement for my whole adult life.

I’ve run into plenty of setbacks.

But I’ve learned something interesting…

Setbacks are rarely setbacks.

Often they’re nudges from life to look in a different direction, or even take a break.

In the early days, I'd try to force progress. But I’ve mellowed since then.

Today, if I run into a setback, I bring myself back to the present moment and notice what I’m interested in now.

CREATIVE THINKING IN BUSINESS PART 2

Lateral thinking

Lateral thinking is a term for a problem solving approach that uses an indirect and creative approach, applying reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not flow naturally using traditional thinking and step-by-step logic. It involves looking at the problem or situation from unexpected angles, challenging, thinking “outside the box “. The term was coined in 1967 by Edward de Bono.

Brainstorming

We have discussed brainstorming in detail in our earlier lesson on decision making, so will just summarise it here. For more information go to
Decision Making
Brainstorming or “thought shower” as it is now sometimes called, combines a relaxed approach to problem solving with lateral thinking. It can be carried out in several ways, and is useful for involving everyone in the team, no matter how senior or junior they are. Junior team members, who are not immersed in the detail of management on a daily basis, often come up with the most effective ideas.
Conventional analytical processes limit imagination, so participants are encouraged to contribute whatever comes into their mind without any evaluation or consideration.

White hat- Information, data
Red hat –intuition, emotion
Black hat -Negative, cautious
Yellow hat –benefits and advantages
Green hat –creativity, alternatives
Blue hat -process review
In ordinary, unstructured thinking, people move from critical thinking to optimistic in response to what is happening, without structure. This technique introduces parallel thinking, everyone has the same agenda at a given point.
So a meeting may begin with everyone metaphorically wearing the Blue hat to consider how the meeting will be conducted, and to decide objectives. The group then moves to Red hat mode, to collect opinions and reactions.

Optimimizing Business performance to drive success

Let’s have a look at some of the concepts involved in business excellence;-

Performance measurement

Performance measurement is the regular measurement of outcomes and results, which produces quantifiable data that can be used to assess how an organisation, team or individual is performing against specified targets and objectives.

Benchmarking business performance

This is the process of making comparisons with other people, processes or businesses, in order to learn from others, establish best practice and improve performance. It can be informal, or formal.
